Newborn Care

Once or twice a week, a newborn is left behind at the hospital in Tangier. The hospital relies on donations for the basics, and doctors sometimes pay out of their own pockets. We cover those first days.

The need

What does a baby left at the hospital need?

The same as any newborn: milk, nappies, clothes, medicine and clean bedding, every day, until the baby moves on to an orphanage or a family. The hospital doesn't have a budget for these, so it depends on donations.

Milk alone costs around $10 to $20 a week for one baby. For many people in Morocco, that's a full day's wages. It adds up fast, and it's often the doctors and nurses who end up paying.

What your gift buys

We buy what the ward asks for and take it to the hospital ourselves.

  • Milk

Formula for babies who have no one to feed them.

  • Nappies and clothing

The basics for the first days and weeks.

  • Medicine

What the doctors prescribe, when the ward has none.

  • Clean linen

Blankets and sheets, washed and changed often.

Current goal

A washing machine for the ward

The doctors asked for one, so there are always clean clothes and blankets for the babies.

How it works

How do you make sure it reaches the babies?

We don't send money to the hospital. We buy the supplies ourselves, take them to the ward and hand them to the staff.

Then we publish the purchase: the date, what we bought, what it cost, and a photo of the receipt when there is one. Many small shops and pharmacies here only write receipts by hand, so we say what kind of proof each entry has.

Keep the milk coming

A monthly gift means the ward can count on it. You can also give once.

Questions about Newborn Care

What do you buy for the newborns?

Milk, nappies, clothing and medicine, plus what the ward asks for, such as clean linen. We buy what the hospital staff ask for and take it to the hospital ourselves.

Why don't you show photos of the babies?

Because they can't agree to it. We show hands, supplies and places, never the faces of babies or mothers. The receipts and updates are the proof, not the children.

How will I know where my money went?

We publish every purchase on our Where the money goes page: the date, the project, what we bought and what it cost, with a photo of the receipt when there is one. Many small shops in Morocco only give handwritten receipts, so each entry says what kind of proof we have.

Can I donate from inside Morocco?

Not yet. Raising money inside Morocco needs separate approval from Rabat, so for now we only accept gifts from outside the country. If you live in Morocco you can still help: request a first-aid class for your mosque or school, or tell us if you're a qualified trainer.
