Questions

If your question isn't here, send it to us and we'll answer.

About us and giving

Is Glimmer of Dawn a registered charity?

Yes. Glimmer of Dawn is registered as a charity in Tangier, Morocco. The registration certificate lists our board members' personal details, so we don't publish it online, but we'll send you a copy if you ask. Choose “Certificate request” on the contact form.

How can I give right now?

By bank transfer. Online card and PayPal giving will follow. Until our bank details are on the Donate page, send us a message and we'll reply with them.

Can I donate from inside Morocco?

Not yet. Raising money inside Morocco needs separate approval from Rabat, so for now we only accept gifts from outside the country. If you live in Morocco you can still help: request a first-aid class for your mosque or school, or tell us if you're a qualified trainer.

How will I know where my money went?

We publish every purchase on our Where the money goes page: the date, the project, what we bought and what it cost, with a photo of the receipt when there is one. Many small shops in Morocco only give handwritten receipts, so each entry says what kind of proof we have.

Can I give my zakah through you?

Yes. Choose Zakah when you give, or write ZAKAH in your bank transfer reference. Zakah gifts are kept apart from all other gifts and only spent on people who are eligible to receive zakah.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Not at the moment. We're registered in Morocco, not in the US, UK or EU, so gifts to us don't currently qualify for tax relief in those countries.

Can I help without giving money?

Yes. If you're a qualified first-aid trainer, or you run a mosque or school in Tangier that would host a free class, we'd like to hear from you. Use the contact form and pick the topic that fits.

About the projects

What do you buy for the newborns?

Milk, nappies, clothing and medicine, plus what the ward asks for, such as clean linen. We buy what the hospital staff ask for and take it to the hospital ourselves.

Why don't you show photos of the babies?

Because they can't agree to it. We show hands, supplies and places, never the faces of babies or mothers. The receipts and updates are the proof, not the children.

Who can come to a first-aid class?

Anyone. Classes are free, last about an hour and take place in mosques and schools. You don't need any medical background.

Does a mosque or school pay for a class?

No. Classes are free for the people who come and for the place that hosts them. Donations pay the trainer.

About zakah

What is the nisab?

The nisab is the minimum amount of wealth you must have before zakah is due. It's measured against 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver, so its value changes with the price of those metals. If your zakatable wealth is below the nisab, you owe no zakah.

When is my zakah year?

Your zakah year runs on the Islamic (lunar) calendar, not from 1 January. It starts on the day your wealth first reached the nisab, and zakah is due when one lunar year has passed with your wealth still at or above it.

Do I pay zakah on my house or car?

Not on the home you live in or the car you use. Zakah is due on savings and on goods held for sale, not on things you own for your own use.

My business sells a service. What do I pay zakah on?

On the cash and savings the business holds, and on money customers owe you that you expect to be paid. There's no stock to count, and the service itself isn't zakatable.
